Triclosan and Testosterone
Banned By The EU Five Years Ago But Still Widely Available In The US –
One everyday compound that is hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons is a chemical called Triclosan… Still widely found in everyday household products in all but one state in the US, the EU actually banned this product over 5 years ago.
But What Is Triclosan
Triclosan, (full name 2,4,4’-Trichloro-2”-hydroxyphenyl ether) is an antifungal, antibacterial compound widely used in household products such as soaps, cleansing wipes, toothpastes, deodorants, shaving creams and gels, plastic toys, and even in some anti fungal socks..
It can also be found in chopping boards, fridges and even your childrens luchboxes.
It has also been shown to cause a resistance to antibiotics
basically its everywhere and in everything….
So Why Have The EU Banned It?
In A Nut Shell… Triclosan is a proven carcinogenic and a powerful endocrine disruptor..
The FDA evaluated Triclosan back in 1994, declaring it to be safe, but more recent studies have confirmed that its use can potentially cause cancer and has a profound effect on our endocrine system.
The FDA started re-evaluating triclosan back in 2013 but to date no more action has been taken,
Following the EU ban, one state in the US – Minnesota followed suit…elsewhere you will still find it everywhere and in everything.…
One recent study showed a clear effect of triclosan on the leidig cells in the testes..causing the production of testosterone to reduce significantly…
Another study this time on lab rats showed that triclosan significantly reduced testosterone production, increased hepatic liver enzymes and drastically reduced thyroid hormones… alongside the drop in testosterone it was discovered that triclosan also reduced LH (Luteinizing hormone) FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), Cholesterol Synthesis and Pregnenolone Synthesis
How To Avoid Triclosan
Until the FDA come to their senses and ban triclosan, its best to try and avoid anything that contains it…. its difficult, but not impossible, you can buy household items that are free from triclosan, just do your research before you buy…. the one thing thats hard to avoid is drinking water, its often found in our water, but again this can be avoided by drinking only bottled water or by using a water filter.
Triclosan has no known benefits, and we are sure that it wont be too long before the FDA do impose a full ban on this nasty compound.. until then, if you value your testosterone levels, no make that your general health..- do your best to avoid it
