Testosterone and Cannabis
As a non-user I have never (to be honest) even considered the effects of smoking cannabis (Marijuana, Weed, Pot, Grass) on a man’s testosterone levels..
That is until today when I received an email from a guy asking me that very question…
Following on from his email, I have done some research and these are my findings:
Cannabis and Testosterone – The Clinical Facts
We have researched and looked at a number of studies that looked at the effects of smoking cannabis on testosterone levels and the results are significant:
We found a list of up to ten studies that showed beyond doubt that smoking weed decreased testosterone levels quite dramatically and the effects lasted from anything between 24 and 72 hours.. and its not just the smoke from the ‘joints’ that did the damage… the active ingredient in grass is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was also found to reduce testosterone levels.
One study that was carried out on male rhesus monkeys did show that just 5mg of weed (or to be precise – THC – the main component in cannabis), reduced testosterone by 65% and this reduction lasted for 3 days.
Another proven effect of cannabis shown in studies is that it also reduces levels of Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH) as well as Leutenizing Hormone (LH).. both of these hormones are precursors to testosterone production and any decrease in these two hormones will ultimately have an effect of production of testosterone
Another study (Read It Here) – also showed that the opposite applies to the stress hormone cortisol.. this is in fact increased when we smoke cannabis – and again this is the death nell for testosterone production
Another Study (Read it here) – discovered that regular use of cannabis also reduced a males ability to achieve and sustain erections… it decreases endolithial function in the veins in the penis – (the main erection function).
Another thing that smoking Cannabis brings to the party is that it has an estrogenic effect – in other words it can increase estrogen levels… this can lead to other issues such as man boobs (gynecomastia).
Evidence is pretty overwhelming in that when it comes to maintaining healthy testosterone levels, smoking cannabis is not good for you…. it has shown in too many clinical studies to have an anti testosterone and estrogenic effect on you that ultimately does you more harm than good….
