Fenugreek is a herb native to both India and several Arabic regions.
It has formed the basis of traditional medicine for hundreds of years and is largely used for its ability to improve libido and overall masculinity.
Also known as Trigonella Foecum-graecum and Fenugreek seeds.
It is quite versatile in its uses. Its seeds (which are commonly found in testosterone boosting supplements) can be eaten as they are. They can be ground into a flour and used to make bread, and can be crushed into an oil.
They can also be brewed into tea.
It contains a compound called 4-hydroxyisoleucine which works in the body to normalise glucose metabolism in the blood.
This is joined by trigonelline, galctomannin and the trigoneosides which all help to regulate blood sugar in diabetics.
It has one rather strange side effect in that it can make sweat and urine smell sweet, with a common description of maple syrup being the closest comparison.
This is down to a metabolic known as soloton.
Recommended Doses Of Fenugreek
For the purpose of increasing libido and/or testosterone production the suggested daily dose is between 500 and 600mg per day.
This is using a fenugreek extract known as testofen (which is 50% fenusides by weight). The seeds themselves can be used at an amount of between 2 and 5g per day
There have been at least three intensive clinical trials looking into the testosterone boosting effects of fenugreek.
1 trial involving 30 men aged between 18 and 29 used 500mg of fenugreek per day for a period of up to 6 months.
The results showed some encouraging increases in both serum and free testosterone without effecting estrogen levels.
Other trials looked into the libido boosting effect of fenugreek..
Using 60 healthy men aged between 25 and 52, half the group took 600mg of testofen per day for 6 weeks, the other half took a placebo for the same period.
The results showed that the group taking the fenugreek extract (testofen) provided them with increased sexual arousal and orgasms.
It also had a positive effect on general muscle strength and well being. The conclusion was that testofen had s significant positive effect on libido and also helped to maintain normal testosterone levels.
Feugreek has been shown to help increase milk production in lactating mothers with a few trials confirming this fact.
It has analgesic properties and can also help reduce appetite when taken by obese persons, it can also be beneficial in helping protect the liver when taken by those with alcohol dependancy.
Problems and side effects
There have been some allergies linked to fenugreek. Inparticular there is a link between foodstuffs like chickpeas and fenugreek.
If you are intolerant to chickpeas, then you could also be allergic to fenugreek
Fenugreek should not be taken by pregnant women. In isolated cases it has shown abortifacient properties (the ability to trigger abortion) or induce early birth ( usually in the third trimester.)
If taken in the correct doses, fenugreek has been proven to help boost libido and stabilise, if not increase testosterone in a normal health male.

One study involving male bodybuilders saw the test subjects take 2.5mg of boron daily for 9 weeks.. this failed to see any noticeable changes in testosterone production..
Another study, contradicting the first study again in healthy males saw the subjects take 10mg of boron for 4 weeks, saw an 11% increase in overall testosterone.
These and other tests provide decidedly mixed results, it has been shown in other studies to provide an increase in free testosterone.

This new study involved 8 test subjects who were given 10mg of Boron daily over a period of 7 days..
Their blood was tested some 6 hours after ingestion and there was noticeable reduction in SHBG plus a clear increase in free testosterone.. another benefit was that inflammation markers were also reduced…

Its ability as an effective mineral transporter makes it extremely useful when taken in supplement form. But to get the most from it, you need to ensure that the shilajit being used is processed and purified to get rid of any heavy metal content.

Ginger has been subjected to a number of clinical trials dating from 2002 to 2012. of these, 5 were carried out on Rats, mice and chickens with varying results, 1 was carried out using 100 male subjects, 75 of who were infertile, with the other 25 fertile. The age of the subjects ranged between 18 and 44.
The amount of ginger given was not disclosed in the study report ( which was held in Iran) but over the three month test period the infertile men did show an average increase in testosterone of 17.7% with increased sperm motility (47.3%) and improve ejaculate volume (36.1%)
The otherwise healthy, fertile men did not show the same results
In men who are infertile, ginger has demonstrated that it can help boost testosterone levels and could help increase semen volume along with ejaculation strength…
Healthy men however, looking to boost testosterone levels to help with muscle building, will almost certainly not see any benefits..

Clinical Trials Involving Bulbine Natalensis
There have been numerous trials looking at the effects of Bulbine Natalensis on its ability to increase Testosterone, Lueinizing hormone as well as its interactions with Progesterone, Estrogen and Prolactin.
With the exemption of one trial that was carried out on Human test subjects, all other trials have been carried out on Rats.
The Human Trial only looked at the short term safety of Bulbine Natalensis supplementation in men.. the study, (published in the Journal Of The International Society Of Sports Supplementation) was carried out at the Center For Applied Health Sciences in Stow, Ohio.
It involved 36 healthy men of undisclosed ages, they took two daily doses of 325mg every day for 28 days.. the results recorded no adverse actions at those doses, and the ingredient was concluded to be generally safe for humans.
Another study carried out in 2010 looked at the androgenic ( testosterone boosting) affects of Bulbine Natalensis.
It was carried out at the Center for Phtyomedicine at the university of Fort Hare, South Africa.
Over 14 days, Wistar Rats were given variable doses of Bulbine Natalensis in 0.5ml of distilled water, the doses ranged between 25mg/kg of body weight to 100mg/kg.
The results were encouraging – The testicular and serum testosterone concentration were increased except in the 100 mg/kg body weight where the effect on the tissue and serum hormone did not manifest until after the first and seven daily doses respectively. From 1ng/mL , 50 mg/kg treatment showed: 3.3ng/mL (day 1), 4.2ng/mL (day 7), and 4.4ng/mL (day 14).
The results and conclusion indicate anabolic and androgenic activities of Bulbine natalensis stem in male rat testes with the 50 mg/kg body weight of the extract exhibiting the highest anabolizing and androgenic activities.
These activities further support the folkloric use of the plant most especially at 50 mg/kg body weight in the management of male sexual dysfunction in South Africa.
Reported Side Effects
There are some concerns about the affects of Bulbine Natalensis on both the Liver and Kidney’s
The same university studied these effects and concluded that doses of 50 and 100mg/kg could cause adverse affects and selective toxicity in both the renal and hepatic functions.
Bulbine Natalensis is thought to be very similar in its actions to anabolic steroids.. it could well have similar effects and side effects on the body and should without any doubt be cycled in a similar manner.
It can be found in some testosterone boosting supplements under the name ‘Prolensis’
Although Bulbine Natalensis has showed that overall it is considered safe for human use and that in test rats it has shown testosterone boosting properties.. there is the chance that it could possibly cause toxicity problems with the liver and kidneys….
With these facts in mind we feel that more in depth testing on humans is required before recommending it as a viable supplement ingredient….

There have been numerous studies that look at the various effects of Ashwagandha:
Anxiety – it has showed to have notable effects in the reduction of anxiety and stress
Sperm Quality – It has shown some minor improvements in the increasing of sperm quality
Luteinizing Hormone – an increase in LH has been shown after Ashwagandha supplementation
Cholesterol – Total Cholesterol has been shown to reduce by around 10%
Depression – Studies have shown positive anti depressive effects
Seminal Motility – There has been minor increases recorded after supplemention with Ashwagandha
Fatigue – studies have indicated an ability to reduce fatigue
DHEA – A slight increase in DHEA has been shown after supplementation
Ashwagandha As A Testosterone Booster
There is variable evidence to suggest that Ashwagandha has any real testosterone boosting properties in healthy men….
In studies, it has however shown a slight increase in infertile men..
One study saw men given 5g of Ashwagandha powder for 6 months, the results showed minor increases in testosterone –
Another study carried out on men who were split into three groups ( smokers, stressed and none).
They were given the same dose of Ashwagandha daily for 3 months…
The only group who showed any real increase in testosterone were the group who were initially stressed –
Studies involving Rats did show a slight overall increase in testosterone.
These and other studies have suggested that Ashwagandha can help regulate normal testosterone levels in infertile men, but these do not ( at best) exceed baseline levels.
There have been some (I must stress quite rare) reports of burning and itching of the penis mucous membrane along with reddening and discolouration of the penis head after taking 5g of Ashwagandha for 10 days as a treatment for libido..
Ashwagandha does have some health benefits, especially when used for the treatment of stress and fatigue.
Since we wrote this original article, there is also increasing clinical evidence becoming available that help support its claimed ability to influence testosterone…
We are a little concerned about that nasty (although supposedly rare) side effect – although that was caused with high doses, However the fact that it is also really rare does give us confidence
Tip – Look for KSM-66 on ingredient labels, this is the most bioavailable and effective form available.
Pedalium Murex is a fruit bearing herb that is often confused with Tribulus Terrestris.. far less studied than Tribulus, it has been shown to have similar effects and benefits.
Pedalium Murex is also known as Dakhani Gokhru, Bada Gokhru, Large Caltrops and Yenugu Palleru
There is insufficient evidence in trials to suggest a defined and safe recommended dose.. in tests involving Rats, the dose of 200mg/kg does seem to the the optimum..
In Humans this calculates out at
2200mg for a 150lb person
3600mg for a 250lb person
Uses Of Pedalium Murex
When used in traditional medicine, the berries are mixed with a leaf mixture which is then consumed to hopefully provide an aphrodisiac effect.. It is also used in the treatment of animals with intestinal health issues.
Its main components and active ingredients are
- Dinatoin Glycosides
- Heptatriacontan -4-one
- Quercetin ( from the flower)
- 2’4’5’-trihydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy flavones
Clinical trials ( mostly involving Rats) have shown that Pedalium Murex could have benefits that can increase sperm motility, and boost urinary health.
It has also demonstrated a slight positive effect when used to treat stomach ulcers (again in Rats.)
Pedalium Murex As A Testosterone Booster
Pedalium Murex is believed to have testosterone boosting effects, it has however only been tested on Rats under clinical conditions…
Variable dose of between 50 and 150mg/kg were given to rats for 28 days… the results did show some increases in serum testosterone with the levels noticeably higher in the rats given the higher dose.. these increases did actually remain for at least 25 days after the treatment ceased.
Despite its positive results in labs tests with Wistar Rats, the distinct lack of any testing or references to its uses in humans leaves an awful lot in doubt… unless further evidence is released involving its uses and safety in humans, we suggest that Pedalium Murex be avoided for the foreseeable future…..

There are some thoughts that L-Dopa can help to boost testosterone levels when taken in supplement form….
We have uncovered three studies that go somewhere in answering these thoughts.
The first study we found was carried out in 1987 in Yugoslavia… this particular study was carried out on female test subjects.
There is limited information regarding the actual length of the trial or the amounts given to the test subjects.
What we do know is that the scientists did discover that all test subjects experienced a significant reduction in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) – a precusor to testosterone production…
Although the test subjects on this occasion were female, the results did show a noticeable reduction in LH.. something that would have more of an impact of male patients
The Second Trial involved male subjects – 9 test subjects and 6 control for their research…
In the test subjects, they administered 500mg of L-Dopa – something that caused the levels of LH to reduce in 7 of the 9 test subjects
The Final Study was carried out in Japan in 1995…
Researchers carried out tests on Wistar lab rats to determine the effects on L-Dopa on Their LH levels
It was discovered that serum testosterone levels in the treated rats increased significantly and
that LH levels also increased ( the opposite to the other trials)….
The dose in this trial was however much larger at 1000mg per KG of bodyweight…
Similar results were not forthcoming when the dosage was reduced to 200mg, 100mg and 20mg per KG.
The general feeling was that larger doses of L-Dopa could have a direct effect on increasing LH levels..
Something that in turn is proven to increase natural testosterone production.
Side Effects Of L-Dopa Supplementation
There are some potential for side effects, especially with larger doses.. these can include:
- Vivid Dreams and Hallucinations
There is a general feeling that more human studies are required before the true effect of L-Dopa on testosterone levels is fully understood.
\But if the results of the last and most recent trial are to be believed, and if a safe yet effective dosage can be established (bearing in mind the possible side effects).
It is possible that we could be seeing L-Dopa in more and more T-Boosting products in the future..
A natural compound that we have found in a number of T-boosting formulations is a natural herb called Fadogia Agrestis…. but what is it and does it actually work?
Fadogia Agrestis is a nigerian traditional herb sometimes used in traditional medicines as an aphrodisiac.. and libido booster

It has to be said that these are based on trials involving rodents.
Currently to date it is not 100% sure that these are accurate or indeed safe…There are some concerns surrounding toxicity at certain doses..
Traditionally it has been thought to provide pre-erectile benefits, but as of yet this has only been tried on rats with limited results…
Other traditional uses include the treatment of Fevers and even Malaria – but its actual effectiveness is unknown and certainly clinically unproven.
Clinical Trials Looking At Testosterone Boosting Properties
There has been just one clinical study that looked at the possibility of any testosterone boosting ability when taking Fadogia Agrestis..
The study involved white albino Rats…
They were given doses ranging from 18-100mg per KG of bodyweight…
The results did indicate effective increase in testosterone over 5 day period, with the largest dose producing a 6 fold increase…
However toxicity appeared in the rats after taking for a month which started to negate the effects..
Although the initial positive results from the one rodent study looked promising..
There are apparent risks of toxicity that show after taking this compound in supplement form for periods longer than a month…
Although not proven, our recommendation at this time is to avoid any supplement containing Fadogia Agrestis until further tests have been carried out and the risks fully ascertained.
